Mark Rutte, the Dutch Prime Minister, said his view towards “Black Pete” has changed.
The Dutch Prime Minister said that since 2013, he had met several people, including little children, who said they feel discriminated against because Pete is black.
“I met small children, who said ‘I feel discriminated (against) because Pete is black’,” Rutte said.
While most people criticize Black Pete and think it’s disrespectful, the white Dutch people say the Black Pete doesn’t symbolize any race and believe it’s just a mystical fantasy figure.
“You can have all the legislation you want … but if the people in power, the leader of the country, doesn’t seem to support it – and that’s what it looked like in 2013 when he said that about Black Pete – then the struggle will be harder.”
