BY JAIROS SAUNYAMA FEAR and anxiety has gripped villagers in Chimanimani ahead of another tropical storm that is expected to hit the region on New Year’s eve. The storm, named Cyclone Chalane, is currently brewing in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar and comes nearly two years after the region was devastated by Cyclone Idai which killed 340 people, displacing 247 000 with 300 people still missing. It was one of the country’s worst recorded natural disaster. Cyclone Chalane is expected to make landfall in Beira and hit some parts of Zimbabwe, especially Manicaland province. Chimanimani Hotel manager Mandla Mataure, whose premises housed thousands of Cyclone Idai victims in Ngangu, said fear and anxiety had gripped villagers, adding that they had begun awareness campaigns on the issue in communities. “What we have done now is to communicate to communities and to do this effectively, we have engaged traditional leaders who are now alerting people of a possible disaster. We will know more in the next few days if the cyclone gathers momentum. “There is fear and anxiety within the people. We have to be prepared and this is what we are currently doing together with other stakeholders,” he said. According to the Meteorological Services Department, Cyclone Chalane is expected to follow the path of its predecessor. Zimbabwe has not yet recovered from the devastating effects of Cyclone Idai. l Follow Jairos on Twitter @jairossaunyama

Meanwhile, Amnesty International said Thursday that scores of civilians were killed in a \"massacre\" in the Tigray region, that witnesses blamed on forces backing the local ruling party.
The \"massacre\" is the first reported incident of large-scale civilian fatalities in a week-old conflict between the regional ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), and the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, winner of last year's Nobel Peace Prize.
\"Amnesty International can today confirm... that scores, and likely hundreds, of people were stabbed or hacked to death in Mai-Kadra (May Cadera) town in the southwest of Ethiopia's Tigray Region on the night of 9 November,\" the rights group said in a report.
Amnesty said it had \"digitally verified gruesome photographs and videos of bodies strewn across the town or being carried away on stretchers.\"
The dead \"had gaping wounds that appear to have been inflicted by sharp weapons such as knives and machetes,\" Amnesty said, citing witness accounts.
Witnesses said the attack was carried out by TPLF-aligned forces after a defeat at the hands of the Ethiopian military, though Amnesty said it \"has not been able to confirm who was responsible for the killings\".
It nonetheless called on TPLF commanders and officials to \"make clear to their forces and their supporters that deliberate attacks on civilians are absolutely prohibited and constitute war crimes\".
Abiy ordered military operations in Tigray on November 4, saying they were prompted by a TPLF attack on federal military camps -- a claim the party denies.
The region has been under a communications blackout ever since, making it difficult to verify competing claims on the ground.
Abiy said Thursday his army had made major gains in western Tigray.
Thousands of Ethiopians have fled across the border into neighboring Sudan, and the UN is sounding the alarm about a humanitarian crisis in Tigray.

By KATE BRUMBACK Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — As Georgia counties prepare for a hand tally of the presidential race, the state's top elections official plans to quarantine after his wife tested positive for the coronavirus, his office said Thursday. An audit of one race is required before election results are certified by the state, and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced Wednesday that he had selected the presidential race. Because of the tight margin in that race — Democrat Joe Biden leads Republican President Trump by about 14,000 votes — Raffensperger said the audit would result in a […]

By MICHAEL BALSAMO and ERIC TUCKER Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — A Justice Department report has found former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta exercised 'poor judgment' in handling an investigation into wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein when he was a top federal prosecutor in Florida. The report, obtained by The Associated Press, is a culmination of an investigation by the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility over Acosta's handling of a secret plea deal with Epstein, who had been accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls. The report also concludes that none of the prosecutors committed misconduct in their interactions with […]

20 people died following a shipwreck off the Libyan coast, Doctors without Borders said Thursday. The incident occurred just hours after at least 74 migrants also died in a similar incident.
\"Two days ago, our boat set off to Italy from a site near al-Khums, at about nine o'clock at night. And yesterday, at two thirty in the morning our boat broke down and many people died at sea'', Mukhtar Salem Mohammed, Ghanaian migrant said.
Traumatized survivors sat in shock on the shore while others wrapped closely under blankets as aid workers distributed food parcels.
\"When we arrived on site, we found the corpses of 31 migrants on the shore of the beach. We also found 47 survivors, all of them African nationals, including even women and children\", an Immigration official at the Ministry of Interior for the Government of National Accord, Mukhtar Salem Mohammed said.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said so far this year, over 900 people have drowned in the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe. More than 11,000 others have been returned to Libya, it added, \"putting them at risk of facing human rights violations\".
Human traffickers have taken advantage of persistent violence in Libya since the overthrow of leader Muammar Gadhafi, turning the country into a key corridor for migrants fleeing war and poverty in desperate attempts to reach Europe.
While many have drowned at sea, thousands have been intercepted by the Libyan coastguard and returned to Libya. The Libya Coastguard has been backed by Italy and the EU. The migrants mostly end up in detention and often in horrific conditions.
